A coalition of nonprofits and private industry groups will band together to boost funding for New York City's food banks and pantries as 1.8 million residents of the five boroughs see their SNAP benefits run dry due to the ongoing government shutdown, the city announced.

Mayor Eric Adams' office said that his administration will partner with the New York Community Trust, Partnership for New York City and United Way of New York as well as with local businesses and philanthropic groups to provide emergency fundings for food distribution centers in the five boroughs.

"When New Yorkers support one another in times of need, we become a better city," Adams said.

"That's why today, along with the New York Community Trust, the United Way, and the Partnership for New York City, we're launching a slate of public-private initiatives to support SNAP recipients in our city who rely on these much-needed benefits to put food on their tables."

The US Department of Agriculture planned to freeze payments to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program starting Sunday because it said it could no longer keep funding it due to the shutdown.

The program serves about 1 in 8 Americans and is a major piece of the nation's social safety net. It costs about $8 billion per month nationally.

Two federal judges on Friday ruled that the Trump administration must continue to pay for SNAP using emergency reserve funds during the government shutdown.

President Trump has blamed congressional Democrats for the shutdown, suggesting that the government would comply with the rulings but also that it needed more clarity first.

"If we are given the appropriate legal direction by the Court, it will BE MY HONOR to provide the funding," Trump wrote on his Truth Social account on Friday.

The judges in Massachusetts and Rhode Island gave the administration leeway on whether to fund the program partially or in full for November.

That also brings uncertainty about how things will unfold and will delay payments for many beneficiaries whose cards would normally be recharged early in the month.

The mayor's office is warning that local groups cannot replace the federal government's resources in providing benefits to hungry New Yorkers. Matthew McDermott

Adams said that while "we sadly can never provide as much support as our federal partners, our social services agencies are ready to help New Yorkers in need, and we're calling on business leaders, philanthropic partners, faith leaders, and community members to join us in this effort."

Kathryn Wylde, president and CEO of the Partnership for New York City, the nonprofit that represents more than 300 local businesses, said that "local government and philanthropy cannot come close to replacing federally funded entitlement programs, but we can certainly help support the organizations that are collecting and distributing food during this emergency."

A Southern California woman rushed her dog to the vet after it ingested methamphetamine during a routine walk in the park.

The owner, who identified herself as Nancy, told KABC-TV that she took her two dogs, Arah and Tobie, for a walk in Laurel Park in the Orange County town of Los Alamitos on Oct. 20.

Nancy said that things seemed to be fine until she came home a short time later and noticed Tobie acting strange.

"When we got home, she was just sitting there, and I was trying to call her, and she wouldn't come, and she wouldn't let me touch her," Nancy told KABC-TV.

"She didn't want to eat treats, then she started just twitching and just doing a mouth thing, and I thought she was maybe having a seizure."

"It just looked like something freaked her out."

Nancy took Tobie to the vet, who was stunned to see that her body temperature had risen to an unusually high 108.

"She told me in her practice, she's never seen a 108. She's only seen a 106 in 30 years of practice," said Nancy.

Tobie was rushed to the emergency room, where blood tests revealed that she had traces of methamphetamine and amphetamine in her system.

Nancy told KABC-TV that she's convinced Tobie ingested the drug during their walk in the park.

"I was just shocked, but I know it came from [the park] because we went straight home … we do it every day. It's our usual pattern, so it just freaked me out," said Nancy.

Doctors told Nancy that it was possible Tobie suffered irreversible brain damage as a result of the exceedingly high body temperature.

"When we got home, she was just sitting there, and I was trying to call her, and she wouldn't come, and she wouldn't let me touch her," Nancy told KABC-TV. ABC 7 EYEWITNESS NEWS

"Her heart rate was 200. I just can't imagine if I hadn't got her in when I did," said Nancy.

Nancy said that the residues of narcotics in the park poses a danger to children.

"It's just concerning, because we walk here all the time. There's an elementary school right there, and you know, it's scary," she told KABC-TV.

"My vet said they could've just stepped in some powder and licked their paws."

The dog likely was exposed to light traces of the drug.

"It doesn't need to be a lot. They could've just sniffed it and licked their nose, so it's just very concerning," according to Nancy.

"I mean, it could've been a kid."

Oleksandr Usyk, at 38, is no longer the spring chicken he once was. But thanks to his remarkable skills, he is still ruling the heavyweight division with iron fists. He had plans to retire, but then he quickly turned his decision around to claim that 2026 will not be the end of his run. "I'll fight until I'm 41," the Ukrainian star said not too long ago. But that decision has not boded well with his former promoter and friend, Alex Krassyuk.

The undisputed heavyweight champion, during an interview with Ready to Fight, revealed that his career will go on for a few more years. Oleksandr Usyk plans to finish his career and then build fighters by taking them under his wing. *"[After retirement] I'll build a sports academy. I'll train there and train others," *the undisputed heavyweight champion stated. However, his former promoter and business partner suggests that he should leave the sport of boxing now, since he's at the top of his game, before the sport leaves him.

Asking Usyk to consider not waiting to retire until the wheels fall off, Alex Krassyuk said, "I'm confident he needs to retire now. There's a saying, 'It's better to leave an hour early than two minutes late,'" during an interview with Eva Korshik. "Imagine he retires now—undefeated forever, never knocked down, unified in two weight classes."

It's hard to argue with what Oleksandr Usyk's former promoter has suggested. The heavyweight star is just a couple of years away from his 40s and has already made an indelible mark on boxing. So, walking away now will help 'The Cat' avoid an unceremonious end to his boxing career. Iconic names like Muhammad Ali and even Mike Tyson ended their careers after racking up a losing streak, so this could stand as a chance for Usyk to prevent that from happening to himself.

But while Oleksandr Usyk's former partner is calling for him to retire, reports have come out claiming that the Ukrainian is already in talks to face his next opponent. That opponent may be none other than another undefeated fighter and the WBA and WBO interim heavyweight champion, Fabio Wardley.

Oleksandr Usyk to fight Fabio Wardley next?

Fabio Wardley recently announced himself as a top boxer after handing Joseph Parker an upset loss in England. He's in luck now because he's reportedly in contact with Oleksandr Usyk's team to finalize the terms for a potential fight between the two heavyweights.

"At the moment, the deal is Usyk has to defend his WBO title against Fabio," veteran promoter Frank Warren told talkSport. "We're in negotiations… If we can't agree terms, it'll go to purse bids….whoever wins the purse bids will determine where that fight takes place, and the date and contracts will have to be signed. And then, Mr Usyk will either sign it or he won't."

Well, Frank Warren may not need to worry about Oleksandr Usyk accepting this fight because he intends to keep going for three more years. However, do you think it would be wise for him to simply step out of the ring and retire as the undisputed heavyweight champion? Let us know in the comments section below.

The Miami Dolphins just became the first team this season to pull the trigger on a front-office shakeup, firing their General Manager midyear. Now, the rumor mill is spinning out of control. With an interim GM, Champ Kelly stepping in, it sounds like Miami might be open for business. Cowboys legend Michael Irvin is already connecting the dots.

On his YouTube channel, Irvin didn't waste any time urging Jerry Jones to take advantage of the Dolphins' chaos to shore up Dallas' underperforming defense. He dropped some names that made ears perk up in the Cowboys Nation. "Bradley Chubb, will they be trading him? Will they be trading Jaelan Phillips? They wanna try to enquire about (Jaylen) Waddle."

Sure, bringing in guys like Chubb or Phillips might not fix everything that's gone wrong with the Cowboys' defense this season. But it surely would be a massive boost. "All this talk about the Dallas Cowboys in the market for a trade. When I heard Bradley Chubb's only gonna be making a million, I said 'Uh Oh,' a new GM, Cowboys will be poking around to see what kind of deal they can get."

"So they're throwing everything around what's going on with the Dolphins, and I say, 'Hmm. That looks like a situation where Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones will be calling to see what they can get,''" Irvin added.

There's plenty of logic behind that idea. Chubb, the fifth overall pick in the 2018 draft, was shipped to Miami from Denver back in 2022. He's carrying a base salary of just $1.255 million this season, though if the Dolphins were to move him before Tuesday's trade deadline, they'd be stuck with a $23.8 million dead-money hit in 2026.

Phillips, meanwhile, is playing on his fifth-year option, pulling in $13.25 million for the season. If the Cowboys made a move, they'd be taking on around $5.8 million of that salary. It might just be enough to tempt Jerry Jones.

The catch? Dallas wouldn't be the only team at the table. According to insider Mike Florio, multiple clubs have already inquired about Miami's pass rushers, meaning it could turn into a bidding war fast. And as for Jaylen Waddle? Well, the Cowboys, or any other team, can forget about him.

Dolphins reluctant to trade Jaylen Waddle

On Sunday, ESPN's Adam Schefter pretty much poured cold water on the idea that the Dolphins might entertain offers for their star wideout. "For starters, the Dolphins are expected to ask for (in the words of a source) "a 1-plus" in any potential trade for Waddle, meaning they believe they would have to receive a first-round draft pick plus other compensation," he wrote.

Sure, the Cowboys have the draft capital, two first-rounders over the next two years. But does it feel like a deal that makes sense for anyone involved? Jerry Jones loves a splash as much as anyone in football, but this isn't a splash that solves his problems.

For Miami, it's hard to imagine life without Waddle. He's been one of the few steady forces on a team that's lost its early-season rhythm. Since Tyreek Hill went down, Waddle has led the Dolphins in receiving in four of their last five games. He's the one piece of that offense that has actually worked.

For the Cowboys, George Pickens has turned into one of the quiet success stories of this Dallas season. When CeeDee Lamb missed time, Pickens stepped right into the WR1 role and looked the part. Through the season, he's caught 43 passes and found the end zone six times.

He and Lamb could easily become one of the best WR pairings in football. Prescott loves throwing to him, Lamb's openly talked about how well they complement each other, and Jerry Jones adores him, too. Will the Dolphins choose to just extend Waddle's contract?
