Less than year before World Cup, US winless in its last 7 games against top 25 opponentsNew Foto - Less than year before World Cup, US winless in its last 7 games against top 25 opponents

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) — The United States is consistent as it prepares to host next year's World Cup: The Americans keep losing to top 25 teams and home games feel like road matches as fans cheer opponents. "Going up to the World Cup we need to build confidence within ourselves and give the fans confidence, so it's disappointing to lose the game, for sure," forward Folarin Balogun said after Saturday's2-0 defeat to South Koreain a friendly. With a crowd of 26,500 cheering on the Taegeuk Warriors, Son Heung-min scored in the 18th minute and set up Lee Dong-gyeong's goal in the 43rd. The 15th-ranked Americans are winless in their last seven games against top 25 teams and have been outscored 17-3, including 11-1 in five straight losses. Coach Mauricio Pochettino's ever-positive outlook was essentially: What, me worry? "We need to start to win when the World Cup starts," he said. "Too many examples that teams — they win during five years and then arrive to the World Cup and then they don't arrive in the best condition. I was involved in 2002 with Argentina, we were beating (teams) during five years and then we arrived to the the World Cup and we were out in the group stage." Pochettino pointed out that the U.S. outplayed South Korea for much of the game and had a 2.23 expected goals from 17 shots while the visitors had 0.74 from five. No. 23 South Korea, which has qualified for its 11th straight World Cup, went ahead when Lee Jae-sung fed a through ball as Son broke past defender Tristan Blackmon and beat goalkeeper Matt Freese to the far post. South Korea doubled the lead when Son ran onto Lee Jae-sung's flick and tumbled over Freese. The ball rolled to Lee Dong-gyeong, who put the ball into the empty net with a backheel. "We were so passive and providing the space to score," Pochettino said. "We showed a little bit lack of communication, but that is normal." Just half the current roster was at the Gold Cup and several regulars weren't asked in for the match against South Korea or Tuesday's game against 17th-ranked Japan in Columbus, Ohio. Blackmon started in his international debut at age 29. Pochettino said the Americans can't be judged "like we are a very consolidated or stable team with a roster that they are playing for four years together." "I don't think we feel pressure to win. Obviously we want to win, but they're friendlies, so this is the time that we can learn," saidright back Sergiño Dest, who made his first appearance since March 2024 after recovering from a torn right ACL. "We need to be sharp at all times, because even though you play a pretty decent game, if you're not sharp for one second, you can get the goal against." After losing theCONCACAF Gold Cup final to Mexicoin July, the U.S. planned eight friendlies before players report for training ahead of the World Cup. The Americans' World Cup opener on June 12 will be their first competitive match in 11 months. "At the end of the day you feel the importance of games when they really, really mean something and you feel the difference in level of intensity to a game like today compared to even Gold Cup," midfielder Tyler Adams said. "When the game means something, everyone's playing all out at 100% every single game when you want to go through in the group and you want play in the final and you want to win silverware. So it is a little bit of a different environment and we need to push ourselves to understand that these games have a high value right now." Seats were filled with fans in the South Korean color of red. "It was like a home match," Taegeuk Warriors coach Hong Myung-bo said. Pochettino lavished praise on opposing fans after they dominated stadiums during Gold Cup matches against Guatemala in St. Louis and Mexico in Houston. He was more reserved this time. "I want to be positive from now and to encourage our fans to come," he said, "hope that we can change ... sometimes the percentage of the fans of the opponent and our own fans here." He added that at the World Cup "with the help with the fans, I think we are going to be very, very difficult to beat." Pochettino revealed some advice he gave players after the match about friendlies, when there is no video review. "When we play a game without VAR," he said, "we need to be a little bit more naughty." ___ AP soccer:https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

Lile's tiebreaking homer, Lord's season-best 7 strikeouts lead Nationals past Cubs 2-1New Foto - Lile's tiebreaking homer, Lord's season-best 7 strikeouts lead Nationals past Cubs 2-1

CHICAGO (AP) — Daylen Lile hit a tiebreaking home run in the fourth inning and rookie Brad Lord struck out a season-best seven to help the Washington Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 on Saturday. Lile's solo shot off Matthew Boyd (12-8) gave the Nationals the lead for good. Lord (5-8) struck out the side in the third and fourth and allowed two hits, an earned run and four walks in the first 5 2/3 innings as the Nationals won for the fourth time in five tries. Cole Henry, the fourth Washington reliever, worked the ninth and earned his second save. Chicago batters drew seven walks but weren't able to capitalize. The Cubs' lone run came in the second when Carson Kelly knocked in Pete Crow-Armstrong on a ground-out. Boyd worked the first seven innings and allowed seven hits and both runs while striking out three. The Nationals started the game with three straight hits, including Jorge Alfaro's RBI single. Crow-Armstrong needed help from the training staff after fouling a ball off his right leg during a sixth-inning at-bat, and did not return to the field due to what the club called a right knee contusion. Chicago manager Craig Counsell said before the game that All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker (calf) would not need a spell on the injured list. He missed a third straight game with the injury. Key moment Lile, who tripled twice a day earlier, barely cleared the right-field basket leading off the fourth. But that was all the offense Washington's pitchers would need in the game. Key stat Boyd had a pair of successful pickoffs, including getting Abrams in the fifth inning, for his 10th of the season, setting a club season record mark and moving past the record set in 1913 by Charlie Smith. The left-hander also caught Brady House in a second-inning rundown. Up next Washington sends LHP Andrew Alvarez (1-0. 0.00 ERA) to the mound for Sunday's series finale. The Cubs have not named a starter. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

South Korea says US release of video showing workers' arrest was regrettableNew Foto - South Korea says US release of video showing workers' arrest was regrettable

By Hyunjoo Jin SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korea said on Saturday that the U.S. release of photos and a video of the arrest of hundreds of Korean workers was regrettable, especially as the incident followed so closely after a summit between the two nations' leaders. U.S. immigration officials raided a Hyundai Motor car battery factory on Thursday and later released a video and photos of workers shackled at the wrists, waist and ankles getting on a bus after the raid. The crackdown could risk damaging ties between Washington and Seoul, a key Asian ally and U.S. investor, when the two are trying to narrow their differences and finalise a trade deal after a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo told U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker in a telephone call that it was regrettable the incident "occurred at a critical time, when the momentum of trust and cooperation between the two leaders, forged through their first summit, must be maintained," the foreign ministry said in a statement released late on Saturday. Park also asked Hooker to ensure a fair and swift resolution to the matter. "The economic activities of our companies that have invested in the U.S. and the rights and interests of our citizens should not be unfairly infringed upon during the course of U.S. law enforcement," he said. The arrest of some 475 workers at the plant near Savannah, Georgia, included more than 300 Koreans and was the largest single-site enforcement operation in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's history. The video and photos of the raid, which involved a helicopter and armoured vehicles, showed hundreds of workers standing in front of a building, some wearing yellow vests with the names "Hyundai" or "LG CNS." Two workers hid in a pond before they were arrested. President Lee Jae Myung ordered a swift, all-out response to the arrests, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said at an emergency meeting on Saturday. Cho said he may go to Washington to meet with officials if needed. LG Energy Solution, which is working with Hyundai to build the factory, said it had asked employees to return from U.S. business trips while suspending travel to the United States except for customer meetings. Hyundai Motor said it would investigate its suppliers and their subcontractors to ensure they meet regulations. Trump, when asked about the raid, said on Friday: "I would say that they were illegal aliens and ICE was just doing its job." (Reporting by Hyunjoo Jin; Editing by Edmund Klamann)

Protesters call for end of federal law enforcement takeover of DCNew Foto - Protesters call for end of federal law enforcement takeover of DC

Scores of protesters marched in Washington, DC, on Saturday against President Donald Trump's federal takeover of the city's police department anddeployment of National Guardtroops to the capital. Holding signs that read "protect DC home rule" and "stop the Trump takeover," participants in the "We Are All DC" march journeyed from Meridian Hill Park to Freedom Plaza near the White House to protest what they see as Trump's authoritarian push to control the district. "To see the destruction of the federal workforce and the importation of the National Guard to try to keep peace where crime is at the lowest it's been in 30 years. It's just, it moved me to protest," David Reinke, a former government contractor who lives in neighboring Maryland, told CNN. Last month, Trump declared a crime emergency and ordered the federal government to take control of DC's police department, surged federal law enforcement into the district and deployed National Guard troops – a broad effort that has drawn the ire of many city residents. DC's violent crime rate has plummeted in the last decades and reached its lowest since 1966 in 2024,CNN previously reported. Of the National Guard troops in DC, Howard University student Stephanie Collins-Stewart told CNN, "I honestly feel like it's a tactic, like they're trying to intimidate us. But I've been going here for school for the past few years and I know what DC is like. It's pretty calm for the most part." Another protester, Kristine Sieloff, a public school teacher from Baltimore, told CNN she's concerned Trump will soon send the National Guard to her city — which he has threatened — arguing that it's just "a show of force that's meant to intimidate people." Marchers on Saturday also held anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement signs, and some participants CNN spoke to expressed disapproval of the Trump administration's ICE raids, arguing that it's pulling families apart. "There's got to be a more humane and more diplomatic way to deal with people who are undocumented, and the way they're doing it is very inhumane," Tammi Price, a retired teacher, told CNN. "There's so much more that could be done with the millions and millions of dollars that taxpayers are paying for occupation, the occupation of ICE and the National Guard," she argued. "Those are our tax dollars." The mission iscosting roughly $1 milliona day, experts estimated to CNN. CNN's Jenna Monnin contributed to this report.
