A Marine veteran whose father was detained by federal immigration agents while at his landscaping job in California last month told Congress members on Tuesday that his father is "traumatized" by what happened and charged that the immigration system is "broken." Customs and Border Patrol agents arrested Narciso Barranco, who is undocumented, in Santa Ana on June 21, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Video of him being forcibly detained showed masked agents holding him down on the street and repeatedly punching him after he ran from agents. "My father has no criminal record and should have never been attacked by these agents," his son, Alejandro Barranco, told Democratic members of the House Committee on Homeland Security during an oversight forum examining the Trump administration's detention and deportation practices on Tuesday. "He supported his family and paid taxes. He is a human being, but he was not treated with the basic dignity he deserved." MORE: Millions of undocumented immigrants will no longer be eligible for bond hearings, according to ICE memo Alejandro Barranco said his father, who has two other sons who are currently serving as Marines, is "deeply devoted to this country." The veteran said he believes the current immigration system is "broken." "Cruel and indiscriminate raids are tearing families apart and punishing hard-working people who contribute to our communities every day," Alejandro Barranco said. "My father, like so many others, deserves a fair chance to stay in this country he calls home. The country is better because of people like my dad. It is time our policies reflected that." Narciso Barranco has since been released from custody bond but is "still scared," his son said. "He's still traumatized from everything that happened," Alejandro Barranco said. The Department of Homeland Security said following the arrest that Narciso Barranco tried to evade law enforcement, "swung a weed whacker directly at an agent's face" and resisted commands. "The agents took appropriate action and followed their training to use the minimum amount of force necessary to resolve the situation in a manner that prioritizes the safety of the public and our officers," DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement at the time. "As he worked, he noticed masked men approaching him, and was quickly surrounded by men who did not identify themselves and never presented any type of warrant," he said. "Terrified, he ran. They chased him through the parking lot and into a crowded street. They pointed guns at him, pepper-sprayed him. They tackled him to the ground and kicked him." MORE: Newlywed Palestinian woman released from ICE custody after months in detention When asked his thoughts about Marines being sent to assist in immigration operations, Alejandro said he believes many would feel "confused, hurt and just sad about everything that is going on." "I served with a lot of Marines who are of Latino backgrounds and whose parents and family members, some of them are undocumented," he said. When asked by Rep. Lou Correa, D-Calif., if he was still loyal to the U.S., the Marine veteran replied, "Yes, of course." "I decided to join the Marine Corps out of the love I have for this country and to bring honor to my family name," Alejandro Barranco said. "When I told my dad I was going to enlist, he cried with pride. He told me to give everything I had, because we should do anything and everything to give back to our country." Narciso Barranco was released from federal custody on July 15 and has an immigration status hearing in August, according to Orange City Council officials.

Columbia University says it has suspended and expelled students who participated in protestsNew Foto - Columbia University says it has suspended and expelled students who participated in protests

NEW YORK (AP) — Columbia University announced disciplinary action Tuesday against students who participated in apro-Palestinian demonstrationinside the Ivy League school's main library before final exams in May and an encampment during alumni weekend last year. A student activist group said nearly 80 students were told they have been suspended for one to three years or expelled. The sanctions issued by a university judicial board also include probation and degree revocations, Columbia said in a statement. The action comes as the Manhattanuniversity is negotiatingwith PresidentDonald Trump's administration to restore $400 million in federal funding it has withheld from the Ivy League school over its handling of student protests against the war in Gaza. The administrationpulled the funding, canceling grants and contracts, in March because of what it described as the university's failure to squelch antisemitism on campus during theIsrael-Hamas warthat began in October 2023. Columbia has since agreed to aseries of demandslaid out by the Republican administration, including overhauling the university's student disciplinary process and adopting a new definition of antisemitism. "Our institution must focus on delivering on its academic mission for our community," the university said Tuesday. "And to create a thriving academic community, there must be respect for each other and the institution's fundamental work, policies, and rules. Disruptions to academic activities are in violation of University policies and Rules, and such violations will necessarily generate consequences." It did not disclose the names of the students who were disciplined. Columbia in May said it wouldlay off nearly 180 staffersand scale back research in response to the loss of funding. Those receiving nonrenewal or termination notices represent about 20% of the employees funded in some manner by the terminated federal grants, the university said. A student activist group said the newly announced disciplinary action exceeds sentencing precedent for prior protests. Suspended students would be required to submit apologies in order to be allowed back on campus or face expulsion, the group said, something some students will refuse to do. "We will not be deterred. We are committed to the struggle for Palestinian liberation," Columbia University Apartheid Divest said in a statement. Columbia was at the forefront of U.S. campus protests over the war in spring 2024. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators set upan encampmentand seized a campus building in April, leading to dozens of arrests and inspiring awave of similar protestsnationally. Since returning to the White House in January, Trump hascut fundingto several top U.S. universities he viewed as too tolerant of antisemitism. The administration has also cracked down on individual student protesters. Columbia University graduate studentMahmoud Khalil, a legal U.S. resident with no criminal record, was detained in March over his participation in pro-Palestinian demonstrations. He is nowsuing the Trump administration, alleging he was falsely imprisoned, maliciously prosecuted and smeared as an antisemite.

Trump says trade deal struck with Japan includes 15% tariffNew Foto - Trump says trade deal struck with Japan includes 15% tariff

By Trevor Hunnicutt and Jasper Ward WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the U.S. and Japan had struck a trade deal that includes a 15% tariff that will be levied on U.S. imports from the country. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the deal would include $550 billion of Japanese investments in the United States. He also said that Japan would increase market access to American producers of cars, trucks, rice and certain agricultural products, among other items. Trump's post made no mention of easing tariffs on Japanese automobiles, which account for more than a quarter of all the country's exports to the United States and are subject to a 25% tariff. Reuters could not immediately confirm the elements of the deal announced by Trump, and details were scant. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for additional details, while the Japanese foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's announcement. "This is a very exciting time for the United States of America, and especially for the fact that we will continue to always have a great relationship with the Country of Japan," Trump said. Trump's announcement follows a meeting with Japan's top tariff negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, at the White House on Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the matter. Tyrann Mathieu announces retirement from the NFL after 12 seasonsNew Foto - Tyrann Mathieu announces retirement from the NFL after 12 seasons

One of the best of his generation is calling it a career. Three-time All-Pro safetyTyrann Mathieuannounced in apost on his Instagram pagethat he is retiring from the NFL. The 33-year-old defensive back was entering his fourth season with theNew Orleans Saintsbut won't step onto the field this year. "As I hang up my cleats, I'm filled with gratitude as I close this chapter of my life and officially retire from the game that's shaped me in every way," Mathieu wrote in his announcement. "From my first snap in college to my final play in the NFL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing. Football gave me purpose, discipline, and memories that will stay with me forever. But more than anything, it gave me a community." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tyrann Mathieu (@mathieu_era) Mathieu was drafted in the third round, 69th overall by theArizona Cardinalsin the 2013 NFL Draft. A Heisman finalist at LSU in 2011, he slid to the third round due to off-field concerns following his dismissal from LSU in 2012. He ended up a steal for theCardinalsand finished fourth in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting in 2013. In 2015, he made his first All-Pro team as the Cardinals made the NFC championship game. He spent five seasons with the Cardinals and played well alongside standout cornerback Patrick Peterson. Arizona released him in 2018 and he signed with theHouston Texansfor one season before signing a multi-year deal with theKansas City Chiefsin 2019. Mathieu was part of the Chiefs Super Bowl-winning team in 2019 and made his second All-Pro team that season. He made his third a year later with the Chiefs in 2020. Kansas City did not retain him after 2021 and he made his way back to Louisiana to play for his hometownSaints. He started every game for New Orleans from 2022 through 2024. "To every coach who believed in me, every teammate who battled beside me, and every fan who showed up, cheered, and rode with me through the highs and lows, thank you," Mathieu wrote in his announcement. "You gave me strength when I needed it most, and your love carried me farther than I ever imagined." He did tease that he's not done with football yet, writing "this isn't goodbye - it's just the next chapter." Mathieu has a list of accolades. Three-time first-team All-Pro, three-time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl champion and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame All-Decades Team of the 2010s. He certainly has a case to be a Hall of Fame player. Mathieu entered the league three years after Earl Thomas, widely considered one of the best safeties of the 2010s and almost certainly a Hall of Fame player. They're equal on first-team All-Pro honors with three but Thomas holds an edge with seven Pro Bowls. Pro Football Referenceprovides an index of Hall of Fame players using statistics and awards to calculate aHall of Fame Monitor score(HOFm). It's not the definitive way of deciding who should make the Hall of Fame or not but is a useful tool for this exercise. All defensive backs (cornerbacks and safeties) are grouped together in this metric. Mathieu's HOFm score is 65.20 which is far below the defensive back average HOFm of 97. But Thomas only measures in at 79.03 and Mathieu's HOFm ranks ahead of Hall of Fame safeties John Lynch (64.28) and Eric Allen (58.95). Mathieu wasn't the best player on a title-winning defense but he was one of the best safeties in the league for most of a decade. That will get him serious consideration for induction. 49ers receiver Jauan Jennings reports to training camp seeking a new contractNew Foto - 49ers receiver Jauan Jennings reports to training camp seeking a new contract

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Jauan Jennings reported to training camp for the San Francisco 49ers as he seeks a new contract and the team expects him to be on the field when practice begins on Wednesday. General manager John Lynch said Tuesday that Jennings passed a physical when he reported for camp this week. "I anticipate him being out there," Lynch said. "You guys know our feelings on JJ. He embodies what we think a Niner is all about. He plays the right way and we love him. We're not going to get into the contract talks and all that. That takes care of itself. We love him and he's here." Coach Kyle Shanahan said Jennings hasn't formally requested a trade. Jennings is entering the final season of a two-year, $15.4 million contract and is seeking a long-term extension before the season. Shanahan said he would like to be able to reach an extension with both Jennings and right tackle Colton McKivitz before the season. "The way they feel about us is the same way we feel about them," Shanahan said. "That's the easy part. The hard part is the business side." The Niners were hoping to avoid the contract distractions this summer after dealing with disputes with Nick Bosa, Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams the past two seasons that kept all of them out of training camp practices. They reached extensions early in the offseason with stars Brock Purdy, Fred Warner and George Kittle, but now have a potential issue with Jennings. The 2020 seventh-round pick has emerged as one of Purdy's most trusted options at wide receiver after having 77 catches for 975 yards and six TDs last season. With Deebo Samuel having been traded to Washington in March and Aiyuk working back from a knee injury, Jennings has a big role this season. "It's extremely important obviously," Purdy said about having Jennings at practice. "I love JJ and what he brings to our team. Obviously we've had so much success together and anytime you see something like this going on, as a player let's figure out something so we can get back on the field." Injury updates The Niners have several players starting camp in injury lists with the only expected long-term absences coming from players dealing with ACL injuries: Aiyuk, safety Malik Mustapha, linebacker Curtis Robinson and rookie quarterback Kurtis Rourke. Lynch said those players will likely start the season on injured lists but is hopeful they can return some time during the first half of the season. Receiver Ricky Pearsall, defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos and offensive lineman Andre Dillard all will start camp on the physically unable to perform list but are expected back on the field soon. Ben Bartch, who is in the mix to start at left guard, will also miss at least the first three days of camp on the non-football injury list after injuring his quadriceps working out on his own. Running back Christian McCaffrey and Williams are both "here and healthy," Shanahan said, but their work loads will be managed through camp after dealing with injuries last season. Roster move With questions at receiver, the Niners signed Equanimeous St. Brown to add depth at the position following a tryout on Monday that featured six receivers. St. Brown, the brother of Detroit star Amon-Ra St. Brown, has 63 catches for 928 yards in 62 career games for Green Bay, Chicago and New Orleans. ___ AP NFL:https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
