Packers reportedly signing RT Zach Tom to $88M extension with the largest-ever signing bonus for an OLNew Foto - Packers reportedly signing RT Zach Tom to $88M extension with the largest-ever signing bonus for an OL

The Green Bay Packers have agreed to a four-year, $88 million contract extension with right tackle Zach Tom,NFL Network reported. The deal has a maximum value of $92 million and includes a $30.2 million signing bonus that is the largest ever for an NFL offensive lineman, according to the report. It's not clear from the report what would escalate the contract's value to $92 million. Tom, 26, is approaching his fourth NFL season. He's started each of Green Bay's games the past two seasons, but he has never made a Pro Bowl. [Get more Packers news: Green Bay team feed] The Packers selected Tom in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Wake Forest. He was a part-time player as a rookie who played in nine games, including five starts midway through the season. He split his time as a rookie between left tackle and left guard. Tom earned the starting job at right tackle ahead of the 2023 season and has held down the position since. His performance and reliability at the position compelled the Packers to award him with a lucrative long-term deal that includes a historic signing bonus. The deal for Tom marks a significant pay raise over the four-year, $4.16 million contract he signed as a rookie. For the Packers, it ensures that Tom won't leave in free agency next offseason and secures the right tackle position through the 2029 campaign as Green Bay looks to capitalize on quarterback Jordan Love's prime. Love, also 26, is playing on a four-year, $220 million contract that extends through the 2028 season. Since taking over for Aaron Rodgers as Green Bay's starting quarterback in 2023, Love has led the Packers to consecutive playoff appearances. Green Bay advanced to the divisional round in 2023 and lost in the wild-card round last season to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. The goal in Green Bay this season and beyond is to build on those playoff appearances and contend for a Super Bowl.

NFL-Native American groups slam Trump call to bring back Redskins nameNew Foto - NFL-Native American groups slam Trump call to bring back Redskins name

By Frank Pingue (Reuters) -Two Native American groups on Monday condemned U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to block a new football stadium in Washington, D.C., unless the local NFL team restores its old and controversial Redskins name. In Sunday posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump said there was "a big clamoring" for the team, which has been called the Commanders since 2022, to revert to its former name and that "our great Indian people" want it to happen. Trump also urged Major League Baseball's Cleveland Guardians, who changed their name from Indians in 2021, to follow suit. But some Native American groups slammed Trump for pushing for a return to what they called harmful names. "These mascots and names do not honor Native Peoples — they reduce us to caricatures," the Association on American Indian Affairs said in a statement. "Our diverse Peoples and cultures are not relics of the past or mascots for entertainment." "Native Nations are sovereign, contemporary cultures who deserve respect and self-determination, not misrepresentation." After decades of criticism that the name was a racial slur, the Washington NFL team in July 2020 retired the Redskins name and logo -- featuring the profile of a red-faced Native American with feathers in his hair -- that had been in place since 1933. The National Congress of American Indians said it opposes any effort to revive what it called racist mascots that demean Indigenous communities, calling it "an affront to Tribal sovereignty." "For seventy-five years, NCAI has held an unbroken voice: Imagery and fan behaviors that mock, demean, and dehumanize Native people have no place in modern society," NCAI President Mark Macarro said in a statement. Because Congress retains oversight of D.C. under its home-rule law, Trump could try to influence federal funding or approvals tied to the stadium, but he lacks direct authority to block it. Congress, controlled by Trump's Republicans, also has the power to override decisions by the Democratic-dominated Washington, D.C., City Council, though it rarely exercises this authority. The team, which has been in suburban Landover, Maryland, since 1997, reached an agreement with the District of Columbia government in April to return to the city with a new stadium expected to open in 2030. The White House did not respond to a request for further comment on Trump's post. The Commanders and NFL also did not respond to requests for comment. While some groups oppose the Commanders returning to the former name, the Native American Guardians Association said it supported Trump's desire to bring back the Redskins name. "The Native American Guardians Association stands with the President of the United States in the call to return common sense and sanity back to our nation," the group said in a statement. "Virtually all Americans, to include American Indians, are fed up with cancel culture." The Commanders have won three Super Bowls and are one of the NFL's marquee franchises, ranked by Forbes last year as the league's 10th most valuable franchise at $6.3 billion. Many American professional and collegiate sports teams have Native American-themed names. Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves, the National Hockey League's Chicago Blackhawks and NFL's Kansas City Chiefs have said they have no plans to change their names. SoftBank and OpenAI's Stargate aims building small data center by year-end, WSJ reportsNew Foto - SoftBank and OpenAI's Stargate aims building small data center by year-end, WSJ reports

(Reuters) -Stargate, a multi-billion-dollar effort by ChatGPT's creator OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle to supercharge the U.S.' AI ambitions is now setting the more modest goal of building a small data center by the end of the year, likely in Ohio, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. In January, U.S. President Donald Trump hosted top tech CEOs at the White House to highlight the $500 billion Stargate Project, which would create more than 100,000 jobs in the country. SoftBank and OpenAI, which jointly lead the joint venture, have been at odds over crucial terms of the partnership, including where to build the sites, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. In a joint statement, the two companies told Reuters they were moving "with urgency on site assessments" and were also advancing projects in multiple states. When the project was unveiled, the companies involved, along with other equity backers of Stargate, had committed $100 billion for immediate deployment, with the remaining investment expected to occur over the next four years. Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison said at the time that the first of the project's data centers was already under construction in Texas. Trump has prioritized winning the AI race against China and declared, on his first day in office, a national energy emergency aimed at removing all regulatory obstacles to oil and gas drilling, coal and critical mineral mining, and building new gas and nuclear power plants to bring more energy capacity online.
