A West Virginia couple was arrested after their child went missing for hours without the parents contacting authorities, according to reports.
Nuwna Overton, 33, and Clarence Spotsville, 35, of Charleston were both taken into custody on Oct. 12 on a charge of child neglect creating risk of injury, according to online court records viewed by PEOPLE.
The 12-year-old girl had been wandering around for approximately six hours and ended up at a Dunkin’ on Oakwood Road looking for her parents, WCHS and WSAZ reported, citing authorities.
When police arrived at the scene, officers observed that the child “appeared to be extremely thin,” and the bones in her hands and feet were visible, the outlets reported, citing a criminal complaint. Police allege that the girl weighed just 40 pounds at the time she was discovered.
The Charleston Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
The child was treated at a hospital, and investigators learned that her home was about a half-mile away at an apartment complex called Oakwood Terrace.

Police alleged in the complaint that the young girl was so weak that she had to be held up for authorities to take photographs of her condition, WCHS reported.
Authorities further allege that neither parent attempted to call 911 after the girl left the apartment, per the outlet.
PEOPLE reached out to an attorney for Overton for comment, but did not immediately receive a response. It is unclear whether Spotsville has retained an attorney.
Overton and Spotsville have since been released after posting bond, and waived their preliminary hearings scheduled for Wednesday.
